Once you get past the hokey, nearly incomprehensible "Introduction", Speedbuggy USA really starts "Movin' On". Featuring the two-part harmony of male guitarist Timbo and female bassist Brady Sloan, it's one of those classic 'first songs on the album' that legendary albums always seem to have. Yeah, I like it.
Now maybe it's a bit hasty to start calling this album legendary, though there's no reason not to other than it's relative new-ness. It's got the classic hi-billy of "Truck Drivin' Man", showcasing terrific pedal-steel work by Greg McMullen, and the traditional country twang of "Time to Burn".
"Go Ask Linda" recalls the early days of rockabilly revisionists X, mixing hard-driving instrumentals with vocals that are alternately melodic and narrative. The guitar work of Timbo and Don Rutherford is exemplary, mixing sound and fury like nobody since Faulkner. And just after the crescendo comes the honky-tonk denoument of "Swingin' Doors", again featuring the complementary notes of Timbo and Sloan's voices.
OK, so it's too soon to call it legendary. But it's a dang fine record nonetheless.
