Café Chat

July/August 2004

By Dante Murphy

Summertime, and the livin's easy...in The Café & Port Halcyon.

While many enjoy time off from the rigors of academe—including Lindy Laura, our usual queen of the society pages—the joint is still jumpin'. We've welcomed lots of new members, including shopper, dancer, and all-around cutie rubyredlocks, vintage fashion maven vintageswank, drive-in cinema aficionado CosmicGuy, and dish-dealing debutante melissa. With regards to our longtime residents, we've unraveled the mystery of Funky Butt's screen name, and learned about the political leanings of our favorite barrister, Red Ted.

We've mourned the losses of film and television composer Jerry Goldsmith, sax pioneer Illinois Jacquet, screen icon Marlon Brando, and "The Blob" director Shorty Yeaworth, as well as the gradual demise of VHS tapes in favor of DVDs.

Our friend The Wingnut has moved house, KittenWithaWhip's garden continues to bear fruit—or vegetables and herbs, as the case may be—and everyone's abuzz about their current home decorating and remodeling projects, from refrigerators to clocks to bathroom tile.

Books on fashion, etiquette, and above all else noir-era crime novels seem to be the popular choices this summer, with a handful of recommended biographies mentioned. Meanwhile, a survey has shown Swing to be king in Port Halcyon, with many constituents expressing a love for all forms of retro music.

The ladies of Port Halcyon still can't get enough gab about hair, shoes, and lately, classic perfumes. Take note, fellas! Other fashionable topics include palm beach neckties, "Gene and Trent" dolls, the ongoing celebration of great bargain finds, and a primer on how to tie one's shoes.

at the Rockabilly Weekender
At the Rockabilly Weekender
Our residents have recently attended the Rockabilly Weekender in Indianapolis, an east-coast swing by Royal Crown Revue, the WWII Weekend and Airshow in Reading, PA, and we're all looking forward to the upcoming Seattle Lindy Exchange, The Hot Rod Hoedown in Wilmington, DE, Art Deco Week in NYC, and loads of other great events.

Some old topics have come 'round again, many centered on the romantic history of the prolific waynelee. Rather than focus on the past, however, we'll look to the future and wish him and angelaray the best of luck and health as they anticipate their second child. The topic on great BBQ has been simmering nicely, never getting hotter than the occasionally impassioned but usually civil political debates. Another wacky ebay auction has been discovered, as has the apparent importance of handwriting and using letters as correspondence. Who knew? We did!

The "never ending story" apparently has, but the anecdotes of zootsuitcoot add another chapter about equilibrium and congeniality on a disabled trolley. NJ SWING 1 reminds us of the simple joys of a fresh peach, MissRoulette sings the praises of cherries, while others wax poetic about the things that make them happy.

Exciting new things are always happening in The Café...we hope you'll join us soon!

Happy Trails,
TMBC
